You may recall when the wheels of justice, appeared
momentarily, as action was attempted to take the hidden mask of
Dick Cheney's secret Energy Commission (composed of folks such as Enron & Halliburton execs.) and which many feel was
where the planning for a wide range of injustices was from hatched from (including the California Blackouts & Energy Manipulation to punish Gray Davis, the Iraq War & Afghanistan Oil Pipeline plan itself, and possibly the "new Pearl Harbor" conditions that created Sept. 11th ).
Well, what happened?
One little Duck Hunting trip with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the same man who issued an immediate emergency stay (halt) of the counting of votes after it had been continued by the Florida Court, and suddenly all was forgotton.
So,
unlike 1974 where you had a Democratic Congress
majority and
Committee Chairmanships, and such a thing as
Independent Republicans, and -- one more thing -- a balanced, slightly progressive Supreme Court (one which ruled that Daniel Ellsburg was
not guilty of treason for exposing the truth about the Vietnam War using secret documents) --- in these times you have none of those components in place. You also had a less ideologically-corrupted media back then which was not only challenging Nixon directly, but also showing the coffins & grisley War realities on TV everyday on the news and actually
informing the public.
None of this (democracy infrastructure)
exists today.
What that means is:
- Whatever Fitzgerald charges either Rove, Libby, Cheney, or Bush himself with... Congress will just collectively yawn and take no action whatsoever (aside from making snide public remarks at Fitzgerald).
- The Democratic Party itself will say nothing and have no unified public demand for justice or concern for holding Cheney, etc. accountable -- except, of course, for Mr. John Conyers and a handful of other powerless Congressman -- who may hit upon the idea to hold another meeting in a basement closet. (Barack Obama won't attend, of course -- because as we are told Bush is a nice man and in no way a criminal).
- Finally, if Fitzgerald can prove his case sufficiently to actually force Cheney & Bush into an actual court room, well you just know that another Duck Hunting trip will suddenly take place. Furthermore, the newly crowned "non-ideological" John Roberts will ensure that the case is immediately dismissed and that all charges are thrown out.
So, on the one hand the similarities between now and 1974 are amazing in terms of the implosion & meltdown that this administration is going through. But on the other hand, we have yet to see either the rule of law or the rule of the ballot box ever actually apply to Bush & Cheney.
The people that wanted this worldwide disaster show to be in power -- will continue to keep them there.
And, sadly, the double-standard between the treatment of Bill Clinton and the non-treatment of Bush will be lost on about 55% of the Country (with a little help from News Media spin).
The one thin ray of hope is the 2006 elections. But after what happened in 2004, whatever the Exit Polls show the Democrats winning by on election day .. the hard count will show something very different.
That is the State of the Union (as it has been -- since 2000).
A massive Civil Disobedience movement is the only thing that can really save this Country.
